Excel Functions

finPack provides custom worksheet functions that can be used directly in Microsoft Excel formulas.

These functions let you retrieve CPI values and perform CPI calculations without opening the finPack task pane.

Available functions

finPack currently provides three worksheet functions:

FunctionPurpose
FINPACK.CPIReturns the CPI value for a specified month.
FINPACK.CPIINCREASEReturns the CPI increase from the same month one year earlier.
FINPACK.CPIAVGCHANGEReturns the change between two consecutive average CPI periods of equal length.

functions

note

Case-insensitive arguments

The country and series arguments are not case-sensitive.

For example, ca, CA, us, US, All-Items, all-items, core, and Core are accepted.

Basic examples

=FINPACK.CPI("ca","all-items",2026,9)
=FINPACK.CPIINCREASE("ca","all-items",2026,9)
=FINPACK.CPIAVGCHANGE("ca","all-items",12,2026,9)

The examples use:

  • ca for Canada.
  • all-items for the All-Items CPI series.
  • September 2026 as the reference month.
  • A 12-month period for FINPACK.CPIAVGCHANGE.

Numeric results

FINPACK.CPI returns a CPI index value.

For example:

170

FINPACK.CPIINCREASE and FINPACK.CPIAVGCHANGE return numeric ratios.

For example:

0.031

represents:

3.1%

Format cells containing CPI change results as percentages when you want Excel to display the result as a percentage.

CPI Increase versus CPI Average Change

FINPACK.CPIINCREASE compares a CPI value with the value for the same month one year earlier.

For example:

September 2026
compared with
September 2025

FINPACK.CPIAVGCHANGE compares two consecutive average CPI periods of equal length.

For example, with a 12-month period ending in September 2026:

Average: October 2025 through September 2026
compared with
Average: October 2024 through September 2025

Use FINPACK.CPIINCREASE when you need the conventional same-month annual CPI change.

Use FINPACK.CPIAVGCHANGE when you want to compare CPI averages over consecutive periods.

Internet connection

finPack worksheet functions retrieve or calculate CPI results through BPOpti services.

An internet connection is therefore required when Excel calculates these functions.

Errors

When finPack cannot return a requested result, Excel may display an error such as:

#N/A

This can occur when required CPI observations are unavailable or when the requested country, series, year, or month cannot produce a valid result.

See the individual function pages for function-specific information and the Errors page for additional guidance.
