FINPACK.CPI
FINPACK.CPI returns the CPI value for a specified country, CPI series, year, and month.
Syntax
=FINPACK.CPI(country, series, year, month)
Arguments
| Argument | Description |
|---|---|
country | Country code for the CPI data. For example, "ca" for Canada or "us" for the United States. |
series | CPI series identifier. For example, "all-items". |
year | Year of the requested CPI observation. |
month | Month number from 1 through 12. |
Text arguments must be enclosed in quotation marks when entered directly in a formula.
Return value
FINPACK.CPI returns the CPI index value for the requested month.
The result is numeric and can be used directly in other Excel formulas.
Example
To retrieve the Canadian All-Items CPI for September 2026:
=FINPACK.CPI("ca","all-items",2026,9)
returns:
170
The displayed number of decimal places depends on the Excel number format applied to the cell.
Using cell references
Arguments do not have to be entered directly in the formula.
For example, suppose the worksheet contains:
| Cell | Value |
|---|---|
| A2 | ca |
| B2 | all-items |
| C2 | 2026 |
| D2 | 9 |
You can use:
=FINPACK.CPI(A2,B2,C2,D2)
Using cell references can make it easier to build reusable CPI tables and models in Excel.
Estimated observations
When an observation has not been published by the provider but has been estimated using the provider's recommended methodology, the value remains available to FINPACK.CPI.
The worksheet function returns the numeric CPI value.
The function result itself does not include an estimated-data label.
Use the finPack task pane or inserted CPI history when you need to review whether an observation is identified as estimated.
Errors
FINPACK.CPI returns an Excel error when finPack cannot return the requested CPI value.
For example, this can occur when:
- The country is not supported.
- The CPI series is unavailable.
- The requested period is outside the available CPI history.
- The month is not between
1and12. - The BPOpti service cannot provide the requested result.
Excel may display:
#N/A
Additional error information may be available from Excel for the affected cell.
Internet connection
FINPACK.CPI retrieves CPI information through BPOpti services and therefore requires an internet connection when Excel calculates the function.
