Inserting Data into Excel
finPack can insert CPI information directly into your Excel workbook.
There are two ways to insert CPI data from the task pane:
- Insert a complete CPI series into a new worksheet.
- Insert an individual CPI value into a selected cell.
Insert a complete CPI series
Use Insert Series into Excel when you want the historical observations for a CPI series available in your workbook.
The Value column uses the maximum decimal precision configured for the selected CPI series.
This provides consistent number formatting throughout the inserted Excel table while preserving the underlying numeric values.
Insert the series
- Select a Country.
- Select a CPI Series.
- Select Load CPI Data.
- Review the series preview.
- Select Insert Series into Excel.
finPack creates a new worksheet and inserts the CPI history as a structured Excel table.
CPI history table
The inserted table contains:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Year | Year of the CPI observation. |
| Month | Month number of the CPI observation. |
| Date | CPI period in YYYY-MM format. |
| Value | CPI value for the observation. |
| Estimated | Indicates whether the observation is estimated. |
The newest observation appears first.
CPI values remain numeric and are displayed using the precision configured for the selected CPI series.
The table also includes Excel filters, and the header row remains visible while scrolling.
Insert the same series again
finPack does not replace a previously inserted CPI-series worksheet.
If you insert the same series again, finPack creates another worksheet with a unique name.
This lets you preserve previously inserted data while creating another copy of the series.
Insert an individual CPI value
Use Insert into Excel in the CPI Value section when you want to place a specific CPI value into the workbook.
Insert the value
- Use CPI Value to retrieve the required CPI observation.
- Select one cell in the Excel workbook.
- Select Insert into Excel.
finPack writes the CPI value into the selected cell as a numeric value.
Cell selection
A single cell must be selected before inserting a CPI value.
If multiple cells are selected, finPack does not change the selected cells and asks you to select exactly one cell.
Value or formula?
The current version of Insert into Excel inserts the CPI value itself.
For example, if the selected CPI is:
170.0
finPack inserts the numeric value:
170
The Excel cell can then be formatted independently using normal Excel number formatting.
A future version of finPack may provide an option to insert the corresponding FINPACK.CPI formula instead of a fixed CPI value.
Use a worksheet function for formula-driven results
If you want the workbook to retrieve the CPI through a formula, enter FINPACK.CPI directly in the worksheet.
For example:
=FINPACK.CPI("ca","all-items",2026,9)
This approach is useful when the CPI calculation should remain visible as part of the workbook logic.
Estimated observations
When a complete CPI series is inserted, the Estimated column identifies observations that were not published by the provider but were estimated using the provider's recommended methodology.
When an individual CPI value is inserted, the numeric CPI value is written to Excel. The estimated indicator shown in the task pane is not written to the selected cell.
